Advent of Bloggers 2021: Day 19
Published on under the Advent of Bloggers (Series) category.Toggle Memex mode

I am writing a blog post every day from December 1st to December 24th, 2021, about a blogger whose writing or site I follow. My aim for this series is to help you discover new blogs and to help get the word out about content creators whose blogs I appreciate. You can read more about this series in the inaugural Day 1 post.
Hey Georgie (hey.georgie.nu)
I remember reading a post from Hey Georgie's blog about staying busy and burnout when I was returning from a trip to Edinburgh earlier this year. I didn't quite get to the end of the post I was reading as I am often not good at focusing on trains. But I was left with an impression: I wanted to return to the site to explore it further. Since reading that first post, I have visited Georgie's site many times. Each time I visit, I am impressed by the simple design, the elegant use of images, and the content available to read.
Georgie's site has been going around since 2002. The current site shows posts from 2009 onwards. There is a lot of content in the site archive covering a range of topics. Recently, Georgie has published weeknotes on her site, a post where she shares a few facts about what she has been doing in the previous week. Unlike many weeknotes that are lists of bullet points, Georgie styles her weeknotes almost like a diary entry, in short prose that feels personal.
Georgie also runs a series called "Stylesheet" where she talks about an outfit she has been wearing and the decisions and stories behind each of the features in the outfit. These posts remind me that while I read a lot of technical blogs there are blogs out there that talk about non-tech topics. My blog was initially about coffee and I still like to blog about coffee from time to time. Blogging is a medium for anyone who wants to share their thoughts on the web.
Georgie has collected a list of "top 10" posts on her blog based on what writing she finds the most "popular, interesting, fascinating, well-written, inspiring, and thought-provoking". I love the idea of curating one's blog post to provide a one-stop place to get started. If you are new to Georgie's blog and want to look around at what content there is, I'd recommend stopping by the "Best of Hey Georgie" page.
I love the design of Georgie's blog. The site is minimal but creative. Text is easy to read. All posts are clearly tagged so you can explore posts that cover topics you enjoy. Notably, Georgie has a comments form so that anyone can respond to a post. The threads of comments themselves are worth a read. The comments section often feels like a conversion going on between two people.
Here are a few resources on Georgie's site that I would recommend checking out:
- Spreadsheets, “adulting”, and failing at supposed adulting
- Georgie's Blogroll
- Why ‘growth hacking’ doesn’t really work for old-school bloggers
- Georgie's Weeknotes series
I shall see you tomorrow for the twentieth post in this series. Who is excited for the holiday season?
