Adding hovercards to my website
Published on under the IndieWeb category.
I love how Wikipedia shows you a preview of a page when you hover over a link to another page in a wiki entry. This makes Wikipedia more navigable for me, particularly if I am only looking for a definition of a term (text that appears in the preview) to help me better understand the contents on a page. This got me thinking about adding a hover feature to my website that would show you a preview of links that appear in my blog posts.

Announcing IndieWeb Utils v0.4.0 (with reflections on the library)
Published on under the IndieWeb category.
The goal of IndieWeb Utils is to make it easier for you to add IndieWeb features to your application in Python. In v0.3.0, released earlier this week, we added a lot of new features to the library. But, there were some features that were almost ready that did not make their way into the release. Today, we are releasing those features as part of v0.4.0, in addition to a few minor bug fixes that I discovered since the launch of the last version.

Adding fragmention links to my website
Published on under the IndieWeb category.
I like when websites provide direct links to headings on the page. In Mozilla Developer Network documentation, headings are clickable. When clicked, the URL of the page changes to include a hashtag (#) at the end. This hashtag corresponds to the HTML ID of the heading on a page. When you visit the URL directly, the page loads then moves you to the heading you clicked on.

Announcing IndieWeb Utils v0.3.1
Published on under the IndieWeb category.
I am excited to announce that IndieWeb Utils is now in v0.3.1. This update is the culmination of months of work from project contributors. Before I get any further, I want to note a special thank you to James, Tantek and Angelo for their collaboration in this project. Their contributions, code reviews, and suggestions have greatly enhanced this library.

Adding review support to Breakfast and Coffee
Published on under the IndieWeb category.
Breakfast and Coffee is a place to share information about breakfast and coffee shops you have visited, with a twist: where possible, contributions should come from personal websites rather than directly through the website editing interface. Breakfast and Coffee is a MediaWiki. This gives the site a lot of features like categories, a good page editor, and edit tracking out of the box. But, the site accepts Webmentions. When Breakfast and Coffee receives a webmention, it tries to create an entry on the wiki.

TIL: Fixing the author card on my home page h-feed
Published on under the IndieWeb category.
Assumed knowledge: This post assumes technical knowledge with microformats2. This post is most useful for someone debugging authorship relations on their h-feed or for community members who want to discuss documenting this pattern.

Building an 'on this day' feature for my website
Published on under the IndieWeb category.
"on this day," in the context of the web, refers to a tool that lets you see what you have posted on a particular day over a previous time period, typically over years. I have been thinking about this idea since the IndieWebCamp Berlin event, after seeing David's personal website with a "this week" section. This section shows all of David's posts from a given week in the past.

Subscribe to IANA Root KSK signing and Google algorithm update events
Published on under the IndieWeb category.
I have tuned in to two IANA Root KSK signing ceremonies this year. The last one was held last Wednesday. The Root KSK ceremony is where representatives come together to sign the new keys for the root DNS servers. These are the servers at the heart of the DNS protocol. The root servers let you find TLD-level servers. Cloudflare has a great blog post on what the root servers are and how the ceremony works. The ceremonies are often quite long but if I know one is on I will tune in.

Building an IRC archiver bot for the IndieWeb community
Published on under the IndieWeb category.
A few weeks ago, I learned that the IndieWeb community aims to archive all of the Etherpad documents from meetups on the wiki. Etherpad documents are made available at online meetups so participants can document ideas and what happened in the call. Archiving these documents to the wiki makes them easily searchable and ensures their contents are preserved not only in a document that could be edited further down the line.
